BACKPACKING BASICS CLASS

The course is designed for those who are interested in backpacking but haven't tried it; or for those who are looking to update or improve their knowledge and skills. The course covers topics pertinent to both overnight backpacking and full day hiking, including;

  • Basic Fitness preparation for hiking and backpacking;
  • Trip Planning;
  • Equipment;
  • Clothing;
  • Menu Planning & Preparation;
  • Leave-No-Trace backcountry camping. 

 

Participants must be be at least 16 years of age to participate (13-15 years if acompanied by a responsible adult).

Fully Supported and Guided Two-Day / One-Night backcountry backpacking trips for,  for the novice to intermediate hiker who wish to try their hand at backpacking or increase their knowledge and experience.  We supply all the gear and cook the meals!  This is a hands-on experience where you can learn the basics of responsible backpacking over a two-day period.  We limit the group size to eight persons, plus your guide, to help ensure an enjoyable experience.

Program Fee: $125.00 per person, includes all of the state-of-the art gear you will need, plus meals.

Our backpacking trips average 8 miles per day, over two days, with up to 800 feet of elevation change during the course of the day.  Participants must be able to walk this distance each day, carrying an average of 25 pounds, and be age 18 years of age or older to participate.  Unless otherwise stated, our overnight trips take place within the South Mountain region of south-central PA, conveniently located to Gettysburg, Carlisle, York and Harrisburg.  Specific trail routes will be announced to Registered participants in advance, along with other trip details. ​
